How mahjong solitaire works

Pick any exposed tile - one with nothing on top of it and at least one side open - and tap its matching partner. The pair disappears, freeing the tiles underneath, and the board is cleared when all 144 tiles are gone.

Two boards: classic turtle and an easy layout

The classic turtle stacks 144 tiles across five layers with a left wing, a tail, and a crowned peak. The easy layout spreads 100 tiles over just two layers with bigger breathing room - a friendlier start for a first game or a relaxed session.

Every board can be cleared

Tiles are dealt in reverse from a finished board, so the deal order is a hidden solution: no seed is impossible. Unlimited undo rewinds mistakes, the hint button finds an open pair, and shuffling re-deals the faces of the tiles that are left when you run out of matches.

Numbered boards and a daily challenge

Board #164 deals the same layout for you as for everyone else, and the daily page gives all visitors the same fresh board each UTC day. Share a board number instead of a screenshot.

Frequently asked questions

Is every mahjong solitaire deal solvable?

Yes. Boards are generated by dealing tiles in reverse - repeatedly lifting a matching pair off a finished board - so the deal order itself is a valid solution. If you box yourself in, unlimited undo or a shuffle gets you unstuck.

What counts as a free tile?

A tile is free when no tile overlaps any part of it from the layer above, and at least one of its left or right neighbours has been removed. Blocked tiles cannot be selected.

Do flowers and seasons match each other?

On the classic turtle board any flower pairs with any other flower, and any season with any season. The easy board skips flowers and seasons entirely, so every match is an identical pair.

Is this the same game as four-player mahjong?

No. Four-player mahjong is a rummy-style table game. This is mahjong solitaire (also called Shanghai or the turtle): a single-player matching puzzle that uses the same tiles.
