Five-Letter Word Finder
The five-letter word finder comes pre-loaded for exactly five letters: blank slots stand for unknown positions, known letters go where you saw them, and the contains filter handles the letters you know are in there somewhere.
0 matching words.
No words matched those filters. Try removing a filter or using fewer letters.
Turn your clues into a shortlist
The tool loads in pattern mode with five blank slots, showing every five-letter word the dictionary holds. After your first guess, replace the slots with the letters you learned - green letters in the exact spots they appeared - and the list shrinks instantly to words that fit.
Letters you know are present but mispositioned (the yellow ones) belong in the Contains box rather than the pattern: put the A in the pattern only if you saw it in that exact position, and add it to contains to require it anywhere.
Narrowing without losing the answer
Starts with and Ends with knock out whole families of words when you are confident about an edge. The word-length filter is already set to five, so results can never drift into four- or six-letter impostors.
Grey letters need no action at all - any word still matching your pattern simply cannot contain them at those positions, and you have already excluded what you know. Work letter by letter and the candidates drop from thousands to a handful.
More than a daily-puzzle helper
The same five-letter list is useful beyond word games: teachers use it for spelling warm-ups, writers for constrained writing exercises, and puzzle setters for building mini-puzzles around a hidden answer.
Everything runs in your browser against a static dictionary - the letters you type never leave your device, there is no account, and no sign-up. When the puzzle goes longer than five letters, the same tool handles any length: just clear the blanks and set the length you need.
Frequently asked questions
How do I use this with the daily word puzzle?
Enter the letters you know into the pattern slots - exactly where they appeared - then add misplaced letters to the contains filter. The matching list is your pool of candidate guesses.
What does a question mark mean?
In pattern mode, a question mark stands for exactly one unknown letter. Five question marks mean five letters, all unknown; replace each with a letter as you learn it.
Where does the word list come from?
From a static English dictionary bundled with the site and checked entirely in your browser. It includes common five-letter words you would expect, from ADOBE to ZESTY.
Do my letters get uploaded anywhere?
No. The dictionary loads once and every match happens on your device. There is no account, no server round-trip for searches, and nothing stored beyond your own browser.
